Artificial Intelligence and its role in society

Artificial Intelligence is and will continue to transform the world we are living in. Many mundane and repetitive tasks are handled automatically by AI, freeing us to devote our time and energy to more productive tasks. From SIRI to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (AI) is progressing rapidly. Today’s AI enables faster and more profound progress in nearly every field of human endeavor, and it is essential to enable the digital transformation that is at the heart of worldwide economic development.

Artificial Intelligence in Transportation:

AI has the potential to make traffic more efficient, ease traffic congestion, free driver’s time, make parking easier, and encourage car- and ridesharing. AI-controlled driverless vehicles could reduce traffic accidents and expand the capacity of existing road infrastructure, saving hundreds of thousands of lives every year while improving traffic flow and reducing carbon emissions. Recent Microsoft offering called “Seeing AI,” available in the iOS app store, that can assist people with blindness and low vision as they navigate daily life. Speech-to-text and text-to-speech technology allows more communication for those recovering from brain injuries, those affected by cerebral palsy, or people with other chronic conditions. Self-driving cars use AI to help many different people, including those with hearing and vision impairments, those who use a wheelchair, people with learning disabilities, and so on. 

AI Empowering farmers:

Agricultural robots handle essential agricultural tasks such as harvesting crops at a higher volume and faster pace than human laborers. Companies are leveraging computer vision and deep-learning algorithms to process data captured by drones and/or software-based technology to monitor crop and soil health. AI is being used in applications such as automated machine adjustments for weather forecasting and disease or pest identification. Machine learning models are being developed to track and predict various environmental impacts on crop yield such as weather changes. Today, the majority of startups in agriculture are adapting AI-enabled approach to increase the efficiency of agricultural production. 

AI and cloud computing are the driving force behind much of this change. Microsoft is not only using AI technologies to create and enhance products but also making them available to developers so that they can build their AI-powered products. The Microsoft AI Platform offers services, tools and infrastructure making AI development easier for developers and organizations of any size.
