Introduction: – Power BI – Show/Hide Section. In this guide, you’ll discover how to use a Power BI Show Hide Section approach effectively for your reports.
Let us take one scenario for this blog. If you want to show/hide some section on the report, how can you achieve it? The answer is using a bookmark. Let’s see how Power BI with the show and hide section function is used in detail with a simple example.
Steps:
1. Open Power BI Desktop and insert any visualization and create a simple report. I have created a bar chart from the SharePoint list. It looks like this and leverages the Show Hide Section feature of Power BI.
2. Next, insert the Right Arrow button on the report using Insert Menu -> Buttons -> Right Arrow. Use buttons in Power BI for managing show hide section capabilities.
After inserting the button, adjust the height/width of it to look like the below image.
3. I am inserting Slicer to apply the filter on the chart, and I don’t want this Slicer to occupy space on the report page. It should show/hide when I click on the button. This is a useful Power BI Show Hide Section control for users.
So, insert the slicer control on the report and assign some field to it using which you want to filter the report data.
Next, insert the Left Arrow button on the report using Insert Menu -> Buttons -> Left Arrow.
4. Now it’s time to create bookmarks. First, show the bookmark pane (using View -> Bookmarks) and selection pane (using View -> Selection) in Power BI Desktop. This will let you implement dynamic Show Hide Section actions for your report.
5. Add two bookmarks and rename them to “Show Slicer” and “Hide Slicer” as shown below image. You can give any suitable name to bookmarks; these are essential for configuring Power BI Show Hide Section options in your report workflow.
6. Now set the controls to bookmarks.
– Select the Right Arrow button from the Selection Pane.
– Keep it visible and hide the Slicer and Left Arrow button.
– Click on the “Show Slicer” bookmark. Click on 3 dots of this Bookmark from the context menu, uncheck data and click on “Update” as shown in the below image. This helps you create an interactive Power BI report with a Show Hide Section feature.
7. In the same way,
– Select Slicer and Left Arrow button
– Keep it visible and hide the Right arrow button.
– Click on the “Hide Slicer” bookmark. Click on 3 dots of this Bookmark from the context menu, uncheck data and click on “Update” as shown in the below image.
8. Next, select the Right button from the selection pane, and then in the visualization pane,
– Set Action to On
– Select Bookmark in the Type dropdown
– Select “Hide Slicer” in the Bookmark dropdown. This configuration further enhances your Power BI Show Hide Section interactions within your dashboards.
9. Select the Left button from the selection pane and then in the visualization pane,
– Set Action to On
– Select Bookmark in the Type dropdown
– Select “Show Slicer” in the Bookmark dropdown. This finalizes your setup of the required Power BI Show Hide Section logic.
That’s it; now, you can save and publish the report and check how it works when you click on the Left and Right arrow buttons. The Show Hide Section technique in Power BI really streamlines the viewer experience.
