    SharePoint Glossary Terminologies - Evolvous

    What is SharePoint Glossary

    Here is a list of terminologies we usually hear or come across when discussing SharePoint. Some of the terms must be very common and have become jargon, whereas a few terms require a Google/Bing search.

    Let’s check them below:  


    Microsoft Access is a database program which is part of the Microsoft Office suite of products. It is a database management system (DBMS) that combines a graphical user interface, software development tools, and a jet database engine.  


    An App is a term in Microsoft SharePoint that means a packaged extension or customization that you can add to your SharePoint site. It can run internally or externally but can read and write back to your SharePoint site. 

    App Catalog

    A app catalogue is a SharePoint document library that SharePoint administrators or Global admins can use to acquire solutions from the SharePoint Store or distribute custom apps for Office and SharePoint to be used across SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Viva Connections. 


    Microsoft Bookings is a scheduling tool for managing appointments and is part of the Microsoft Office family of products. It includes a web-based booking calendar and integrates with Outlook. It has built-in flexibility for customization and can be designed to fit any situation or needs of an organization. 

    Business Connectivity

    This feature lets users interact with back-end (LOB) data from within the Office Suite and SharePoint. 

    CAML (Collaborative Application Markup Language)

    An XML-based markup language used by Microsoft SharePoint to define the internal structure of sites, lists, fields, views and content types. It is also used to query data in SharePoint lists to retrieve data selectively. 

    Central Administration site

    It is a particular SharePoint site where an administrator can manage all sites and servers in a farm that is running SharePoint products and technologies.  


    Channels in Microsoft Teams are dedicated sections within a team to keep conversations organized by specific topics, projects, and disciplines. 

    Classic SharePoint

    Classic SharePoint refers to the user interface (UI) that was available starting in SharePoint 2013. It is the legacy SharePoint framework that has been the foundation of SharePoint for nearly two decades. Currently, Microsoft no longer invests in the Classic experience. 

    Column Formatting

    Column Formatting is a SharePoint feature that allows users to customize the display of fields in Document Libraries and Lists using different colours, icons, images and other elements to improve user experience. 

    Collaborate with guests

    Through the SharePoint site, collaboration with guests can be done across documents, data, and lists governed by Azure Active Directory (AD).  


    The Microsoft 365 compliance center delivers a comprehensive set of compliance offerings to support your organization comply with national, regional, and industry-specific requirements governing the collection and use of data.  

    Content Types

    Content types are the generic things like Item, Document or Event, which gets embellished to represent the object we work with within SharePoint. It provides consistency across a site. 

    Content-Type Gallery

    The Content-Type Gallery is the modernized view of the Content-Type Hub in the SharePoint Admin Center’s Content Services, providing a more sophisticated content management tool. 

    Content-Type Hub

    The Content-Type Hub is a Site Collection where you can manage all Content Types and Site Columns available across the entire tenant. Content-Type Hub is an older technology and is used less.  

    Content-Type Schema

    A Content-Type Schema is an XML definition that describes the contents of a content type. 

    Customizing SharePoint

    SharePoint Customization is the ability to improve specific elements of SharePoint functionality by changing settings through the end-user interface to meet their unique needs.  

    Data Loss Prevention

    Data loss prevention (DLP) policy is a set of policies to safeguard the information of an organization by identifying, monitoring, and automatically protecting sensitive items across Microsoft 365 services, Office Applications, endpoint devices, non-Microsoft cloud apps, SharePoint and on-premises file storage. 

    Document Management System

    A document management system (DMS) is used to receive, track, manage and store electronic documents. 

    Document Library

    Document Library is a special type of list which acts as a primary storage location for documents or other files in SharePoint and Microsoft Teams. 


    A set of an on-premises single server or a multi-tiered architecture of multiple servers that host the SharePoint application, including SQL servers that host the SharePoint databases.  

    Flat SharePoint Architecture

    In the modern SharePoint experience, it is recommended to create one site for each discrete topic, task, or unit of work; this navigational architecture is called the Flat SharePoint Architecture.  


    Microsoft Flow (Power Automate/RPA) is a service offered by Microsoft to automate repetitive tasks by letting you create cloud flows, desktop flows, or business process flows. 


    Microsoft Forms is used to quickly and effortlessly create custom forms to collect responses from quizzes, surveys, questionnaires, registrations and more. 


    SharePoint Governance plan is a set of guidelines outlining the administration, maintenance, and support of an organization’s SharePoint environment. 


    SharePoint Group is a container to organize users and assign permission levels on a site, a list or library, a folder or a document. 

    Home Site

    A Homesite is a communication site that acts as your intranet’s top site. It connects all the contents making organization-wide search possible. Home Sites are intended to be used as the landing page for an organization. 

    Hub site

    A Hub Site is a SharePoint site with other associated sites.  

    Hybrid SharePoint

    For enterprises that want to gradually move their existing on-premises, SharePoint Server services to the cloud enable trusted communications between SharePoint in Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Server. 

    Intranet Governance

    Intranet governance includes a well-defined framework for user training, monitoring usage and user behaviour, and communicating expectations to diverse stakeholders.  

    Intranet Roadmap

    Intranet Roadmap is an outlined project plan communicating how an intranet will evolve. It connects the strategy, project plan and the users who will benefit.  

    Microsoft 365

    Microsoft 365 is a complete suite of applications that facilitates personal and business operation through innovative office apps, intelligent cloud services, and world-class security. 

    Microsoft Lists

    Microsoft Lists is an intelligent and flexible application that allows you to track information and organize work across Office 365. 

    Microsoft SharePoint is a cloud-based service that helps organizations share and manage content, knowledge, and applications.  

    Microsoft Teams

    Microsoft Teams is a collaboration tool in Microsoft 365 which keeps people organized, engaged and effective. It keeps all the content, applications, and conversations together.  

    Microsoft Viva

    Microsoft Viva is an employee experience and engagement platform which combines communications, knowledge, learning, resources, and insights for a single integrated experience. 

    Modern intranet

    Modern intranet is an overall eco-system of the digital workplace, helping employees to collaborate quickly anytime and anywhere.   


    Microsoft OneDrive is a central cloud-based repository where one can store all personal file types in one place and access them from any device, anywhere. 

    Organizational Assets Library

    Organizational Assets Library lets you register one or more document libraries via PowerShell as a unique source for images across all SharePoint sites. It allows a content delivery network to provide fast and reliable performance for shared assets. 

    Root Site

    SharePoint Root site of an organization is notably the site with the shortest URL. It is usually the Main Home Site/Hub Site. Root site is a must in each tenant and is created automatically when an organization acquires an M365 account. 

    SharePoint Add-in

    Previously known as ‘app for SharePoint’ is now known as SharePoint Add-in. A SharePoint Add-in is a self-contained functionality that extends the capabilities of SharePoint websites to solve a well-defined business problem. 

    SharePoint Admin

    SharePoint Site Admins are users that have permission to manage sites, including any subsites, create or delete sites, manage sharing settings across the organization, add and remove site admins and manage site storage limits.  

    SharePoint Development

    This platform is mainly for building client-side components such as SharePoint Framework, Add-ins and farm solutions addressing a wide range of needs.  

    SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT)

    SharePoint migration tool is a solution to assist in migrating content from on-premises SharePoint sites to Microsoft 365.  

    SharePoint Online

    Microsoft SharePoint Online is a cloud-based solution allowing organizations to share and manage content, knowledge, and application with people inside and outside the organization, enabling collaboration and coauthoring documents.  

    SharePoint Portal

    A portal is a Microsoft SharePoint site on an organization’s intranet with many site viewers who consume similar content. Usually, it is a communication site with a site page—for example, a company portal and an HR portal. 

    SharePoint Server

    SharePoint Server is a program that runs on a local machine, such as an internal web server, within a corporate network. It is hosted by Microsoft Windows Server and can be scaled down for one developer machine or scaled up for hundreds of machines.  

    SharePoint Training

    SharePoint Training is learning everyday SharePoint tasks and improving skills through videos, tutorials or from SharePoint expert consultants. 

    Site collection

    A Site Collection is a group of websites with the same owner and shared administrative settings.   


    A web part is a consolidated piece of functionality or elements that can be added one or more times to a page to display content. 


    Yammer is a collaboration tool that enables you to connect and engage across the company so you can discuss ideas, share updates, and network with others.
